Established in 1974, Tarutao Marine National Park is selected by CBS for their Survivor Program Series. Located in Sathun Province on the west coast of Thailand, Ko Tarutao, covering, 150 square kilometers, is the largest island among the 51 islands in the Park. The landscape is full of underwater peaks, tropical reefs, limestone mountains, excellent sandy beaches, caves, coves, jungle, rain forest and mangrove swamps.

There are plenty of wildlife on the islands including various kinds of birds and monkeys as well as green turtles, dolphins and dugong. It is important ecologically as a breeding ground for four species of sea turtle. There are also various kind of plants and faunas.

The most popular cave at Tarutao called Crocodile Cave (Tam Jorakae) suggests that there used to be crocodiles on the island. Now Tarutao is one of the tourist attractions in Thailand. Other nearby island, Lipe Island, is excellent for snorkeling while neighbor Adang is stunning with rain forest, hills and waterfalls.

Ko Tarutao was once a panel colony. During 1937 to 1949, Thai government had decided to use the island as the prison due to the fact that the island is far from the mainland, was remote to people and since the sea and its strong wave acted as the natural wall it was hard for prisoner to escape. The stories about the killing shark in the area were told to scare the prisoner from escaping although the dangerous sharks in this area are rare.

There were nearly 10,000 prisoners sent there. After the old prisoners gone, the new one would be replaced immediately. There were around a maximum of 3,000 prisoners at any one time.

In 1941, Prison Department sent 80 political prisoners that they did not want mixing with other prisoners so they are arranged to live at special prison at the building near the beach at Talo Udang Bay.

Because of lack of food and supplies during World War II, in 1946, the prisoner revolted and became sea pirates. The formation of the pirates was started from a few of prisoner took the boat to get free food from local people like rice, sugar, fish sauce, onion, garlic. Soon it became more like the traditional pirates by stealing, robbing and hijacking other boats. This caused the conflict between a Thai and Malaysian government as they robbed and hijacked boats traveling to the Langkawi Island in Malaysian. The British that governed Malaysia during that period had to send soldiers and the navy to stop the threat of the pirates.

On 19 April 1975, the governor announced Koh Tarutao be the first Thai sea national park. UNESCO claimed Koh Tarutao as “Asian Heritage Parks and Reserves.
